Office has established a website to better serve the public needs with
information compiled by our office. Walker
County maps and data
became available for viewing on-line February 2007 and the public response
seems encouraging.
This office, in conjunction with
the Walker County Commission is committed to work together to provide a more
convenient way of doing business with us on-line. We encourage you to let us
know of any additional services that you want to see made available on-line. It
is our pleasure to serve you.
Our website is designed with you
in mind. We strive to provide you with accurate and up-to-date information that
will be beneficial to you.

Frequently Asked
Questions (FAQ)
- Do you
offer credit card or on-line tax payments? NO. Sorry, this service is not
yet available.
- If I
am age 65 do I still have to pay taxes? You may qualify for a full or partial exemption depending on
factors other than your age or disability. Call the tax assessor’s office
for details at (205) 384-7265.
- When
do taxes become due? Property taxes in the State of Alabama become due annually on October
1st each year.
- When
do taxes become delinquent? January
1st each year.
- Is
there a late fee and interest on delinquent taxes? YES, a $5.00 penalty
with 12% simple interest starts after December 31st each year.
- At
what point do you stop taking personal checks for taxes? After February 15th
each year certified mail goes out for delinquent property taxes, the
penalty increases and you must then pay with cash, certified check or
money order.
- Will
my name appear in the local newspaper if I don’t pay my taxes on time? YES,
names are published three times in the Daily Mountain Eagle approximately
30 days prior to tax sale. The names published may be your name since
taxes are paid in arrears, or could even be the name of the person you
recently purchased your property from since he/she was the actual owner
when the taxes became due.
- Who is
responsible for paying the taxes on a fairly recent sale? That is between
buyer and seller to work out at time of sale. Taxes are assessed in
arrears and the complimentary
tax notice will be mailed.
- At
what point will my property be “sold” for taxes? A public tax auction is
held every year, usually the first Monday in May starting @ 10:00 A.M. everything
that hasn’t been paid prior will be auctioned off to the highest bidder.
- Can I
pay my taxes after the tax sale? YES, but the fees and interest are much
higher than they were in October prior to tax sale. There is a limited
time property can be redeemed, call the collectors office for details to
“redeem.”
